nṛtyato gāyataḥ paśyanyathaivānukaroti tān | evaṃ buddhiguṇānpaśyannanīho'pyanukāryate ||
Just as one watching dancers and singers imitates them, so the Self, watching the qualities of the intellect, is made to imitate them, though it does nothing.
Meaning today and context
We get caught up in our thoughts and moods like an audience swaying to music. Noticing that we are watching, not dancing, brings back some freedom.
Krishna gives Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.22.53) the simile of the spectator: as one watching dancers moves along with them, the Self, watching the mind's qualities, seems to act.
