Uddhava Gita 18.1

18.1 Shuka to Parikshit

sa evamāśaṃsita uddhavena bhāgavatamukhyena dāśārhamukhyaḥ | sabhājayanbhṛtyavaco mukundastamābabhāṣe śravaṇīyavīryaḥ ||

Thus asked by Uddhava, foremost of devotees, Mukunda, chief of the Dāśārhas, whose deeds are worth hearing, honoured the words of his servant and spoke to him.

Meaning today and context

A sincere question about how to bear hurtful words is taken seriously; the teaching that follows begins from respect for the one who asks.

Shuka tells King Parikshit that Krishna answered Uddhava, who had just asked how anyone can bear the insults of the wicked. This opens the story of the mendicant of Avanti (Bhagavata 11.23).
