Uddhava Gita 18.28

18.28 Brahmin of Avanti

nūnaṃ me bhagavāṃstuṣṭaḥ sarvadevamayo hariḥ | yena nīto daśāmetāṃ nirvedaścātmanaḥ plavaḥ ||

Surely Lord Hari, in whom all the gods dwell, is pleased with me, for he has brought me to this state, and disenchantment is the raft that carries the self across.

Grief and loss are real; this verse should not be used to tell someone in pain that their suffering is a blessing. Acknowledge the loss first.

Meaning today and context

A loss can, in time, be seen as a turning point rather than only a misfortune. This verse is about how the brahmin chose to see his own fall, not a claim that suffering is good.

The brahmin sees his ruin as grace: it has brought him to disenchantment.
