Uddhava Gita 18.32

18.32 Krishna to Uddhava

sa cacāra mahīmetāṃ saṃyatātmendriyānilaḥ | bhikṣārthaṃ nagaragrāmānasaṅgo'lakṣito'viśat ||

He wandered this earth with self, senses and breath under control, entering towns and villages to beg for alms, unattached and unnoticed.

The brahmin's renunciation is part of the story; for most people the lesson is inner detachment, not abandoning family, dependants, work or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

A life of self-restraint and no need to be noticed: the inner freedom of not needing recognition is open to anyone.

Krishna describes the brahmin's life as a wandering mendicant.
