Uddhava Gita 18.34

18.34 Krishna to Uddhava

kecittriveṇuṃ jagṛhureke pātraṃ kamaṇḍalum | pīṭhaṃ caike'kṣasūtraṃ ca kanthāṃ cīrāṇi kecana | pradāya ca punastāni darśitānyādadurmuneḥ ||

Some snatched his triple staff, some his bowl and water-pot, some his seat and rosary, some his patched cloak and rags; and offering them back, they took them away again.

This describes how the mendicant bore abuse inwardly; it is not advice to put up with abuse or stay in danger. If you are being harmed, seek help: police 112, women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

The cruelty here is mocking and petty, the kind of bullying that targets someone with almost nothing.

Krishna describes how the tormentors played with the mendicant's few possessions.
