Uddhava Gita 18.40

18.40 Krishna to Uddhava

evaṃ sa bhautikaṃ duḥkhaṃ daivikaṃ daihikaṃ ca yat | bhoktavyamātmano diṣṭaṃ prāptaṃ prāptamabudhyata ||

Thus whatever suffering came, from other beings, from higher powers, or from his own body, he understood each, as it came, as what was allotted to him to undergo.

This describes how the mendicant bore abuse inwardly; it is not advice to put up with abuse or stay in danger. If you are being harmed, seek help: police 112, women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

Meeting pain as it comes, without adding the extra suffering of 'why me', can make it bearable. This is a way of holding pain, not of excusing those who cause it.

Krishna describes how the mendicant understood all the suffering that came to him.
