Uddhava Gita 18.44

18.44 Brahmin of Avanti

anīha ātmā manasā samīhatā hiraṇmayo matsakha udvicaṣṭe | manaḥ svaliṅgaṃ parigṛhya kāmānjuṣannibaddho guṇasaṅgato'sau ||

The Self, who does not strive, luminous, my friend, looks on from above while the mind strives; but the other, taking the mind as his own mark and enjoying desires, is bound by his tie to the guṇas.

Meaning today and context

There is a part of us that only watches. Bondage begins when we take the busy mind to be all we are.

The mendicant distinguishes the inactive, luminous Self, the Lord who is his friend, from the individual who identifies with the mind and is bound.
