If the gods are the cause of suffering, what has the Self to do with it? That is between two changing things. If one limb strikes another, with whom should a person be angry, in his own body?
Meaning today and context
When pain comes from forces bigger than us, raging at them adds suffering. The image of one hand striking the other invites calm rather than blame.
The mendicant continues: if the gods (the presiding powers of the senses) cause his suffering.
