Uddhava Gita 18.56

18.56 Brahmin of Avanti

na kenacitkvāpi kathañcanāsya dvandvoparāgaḥ parataḥ parasya | yathāhamaḥ saṃsṛtirūpiṇaḥ syādevaṃ prabuddho na bibheti bhūtaiḥ ||

For the one who is beyond, there is never, from anyone, anywhere or in any way, any colouring by the pairs of opposites coming from outside; that belongs to the ego, which takes the form of saṃsāra. One who has awakened to this fears no being.

Meaning today and context

The part of us that gets hurt by praise and blame is the ego. Knowing there is more to us than that can make us less afraid of other people.

The mendicant concludes his inquiry: the Self beyond is never coloured by opposites; only the ego is.
