Uddhava Gita 2.38

2.38 Avadhuta to Yadu

śaśvatparārthasarvehaḥ parārthaikāntasambhavaḥ | sādhuḥ śikṣeta bhūbhṛtto nagaśiṣyaḥ parātmatām ||

A good person, all of whose efforts are always for the good of others and whose very existence is for others alone, should learn this from the mountain; and, as a pupil of the tree, learn to belong to others.

Living for others does not mean letting oneself be used or neglecting one's own health and needs; caring for oneself is part of being able to serve.

Meaning today and context

A mountain gives streams, stone and shelter, a tree gives shade and fruit, without asking anything back. A life is rich when much of it quietly serves others.

The Avadhuta, telling King Yadu of his teachers, names the mountain and the tree: from them a good person learns to live for others.
