Uddhava Gita 2.39

2.39 Avadhuta to Yadu

prāṇavṛttyaiva santuṣyenmunirnaivendriyapriyaiḥ | jñānaṃ yathā na naśyeta nāvakīryeta vāṅmanaḥ ||

A sage should be content with just what keeps the life-breath going, not with what pleases the senses, so that his knowledge is not lost and his speech and mind are not scattered.

Living on bare necessities is a monk's discipline, not dietary or medical advice; eat enough and look after your health.

Meaning today and context

Chasing every pleasure scatters attention and clouds judgment. Wanting less keeps the mind clear for what matters.

The Avadhuta's lesson from the air (prāṇa, the breath within): the sage needs only enough to keep life going.
