evaṃ kuṭumbyaśāntātmā dvandvārāmaḥ patatrivat | puṣṇankuṭumbaṃ kṛpaṇaḥ sānubandho'vasīdati ||
In the same way, a householder whose mind has no peace, who delights in the pairs of opposites, wretchedly caught up in feeding his family, sinks down together with all his ties, like that bird.
The story warns against clinging, not against loving or caring for one's family. It is not advice to neglect or leave one's spouse, children or dependants.
Meaning today and context
Caring for a family is a duty; the trouble is when it becomes the whole of one's identity and peace. A restless mind that lives only for its pairs of gain and loss is easily trapped.
The Avadhuta draws the moral of the pigeon story for King Yadu.
