Uddhava Gita 20.23

20.23 Krishna to Uddhava

madarpaṇaṃ niṣphalaṃ vā sāttvikaṃ nijakarma tat | rājasaṃ phalasaṅkalpaṃ hiṃsāprāyādi tāmasam ||

One's own work offered to me, or done without seeking its fruit, is sattvic; work done with an eye on results is rajasic; work marked by violence and the like is tamasic.

Earning a fair living is legitimate; the verse is about inner motive, not refusing pay.

Meaning today and context

The same job can be done in three ways: as an offering, for a payoff, or with harm to others. The quality of our work lies in its motive as much as in its result.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): work done as an offering or without seeking results is sattvic; for results, rajasic; harmful work, tamasic.
