Uddhava Gita 20.26

20.26 Krishna to Uddhava

sāttvikaḥ kārako'saṅgī rāgāndho rājasaḥ smṛtaḥ | tāmasaḥ smṛtivibhraṣṭo nirguṇo madapāśrayaḥ ||

The doer who is unattached is sattvic; one blinded by passion is said to be rajasic; one who has lost all judgement is tamasic; one who takes refuge in me is beyond the guṇas.

Meaning today and context

We can do the same work unattached, blinded by craving, or in a daze. The best way is to act fully while leaning on something larger than ourselves.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): the three kinds of doer, and the one who takes refuge in Krishna.
