20.28 Krishna to Uddhava

pathyaṃ pūtamanāyastamāhāryaṃ sāttvikaṃ smṛtam | rājasaṃ cendriyapreṣṭhaṃ tāmasaṃ cārtidāśuci ||

Food that is wholesome, pure and obtained without strain is said to be sattvic; food that pleases the senses is rajasic; food that brings pain and is impure is tamasic.

This is a traditional teaching on food and the mind, not dietary or medical advice. For health conditions or eating concerns, consult a doctor.

Meaning today and context

What and how we eat affects the mind as well as the body. Simple, clean food that comes without strain or harm supports a clearer mind.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): the three kinds of food.
