Uddhava Gita 20.29

20.29 Krishna to Uddhava

sāttvikaṃ sukhamātmotthaṃ viṣayotthaṃ tu rājasam | tāmasaṃ mohadainyotthaṃ nirguṇaṃ madapāśrayam ||

Happiness that springs from the Self is sattvic; happiness from sense-objects is rajasic; happiness from delusion and wretchedness is tamasic; happiness that rests in me is beyond the guṇas.

Meaning today and context

Some joys come from within and last; some come from things and fade; some are really numbness mistaken for pleasure. Knowing the difference helps us choose.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): the three kinds of happiness, and the happiness that rests in Krishna.
