Uddhava Gita 20.31

20.31 Krishna to Uddhava

sarve guṇamayā bhāvāḥ puruṣāvyaktadhiṣṭhitāḥ | dṛṣṭaṃ śrutaṃ anudhyātaṃ buddhyā vā puruṣarṣabha ||

All states of being are made of the guṇas, governed by puruṣa and the unmanifest: whatever is seen, heard or pondered by the intellect, best of men.

Meaning today and context

Every experience and every thought, however lofty, is still within nature's qualities. Freedom is not a better thought but a different relation to all thoughts.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): all things seen, heard or thought are made of the guṇas.
