Uddhava Gita 20.9

20.9 Krishna to Uddhava

puruṣaṃ sattvasaṃyuktamanumīyācchamādibhiḥ | kāmādibhī rajoyuktaṃ krodhādyaistamasā yutam ||

One should infer that a person is joined with sattva from calm and the like, with rajas from desire and the like, and with tamas from anger and the like.

This is for looking at oneself, not for labelling or judging others.

Meaning today and context

We know the guṇas by their signs. Watching our own calm, wanting and anger tells us which force is running us right now.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): how to recognise which guṇa is dominant in a person.
