kvāyaṃ malīmasaḥ kāyo daurgandhyādyātmako'śuciḥ | kva guṇāḥ saumanasyādyā hyadhyāso'vidyayā kṛtaḥ ||
Where is this filthy body, made of foul smells and impurity, and where the fine qualities, charm and the rest, that we see in it? It is a superimposition made by ignorance.
The body-as-impure imagery is about loosening identification and infatuation, not self-contempt. Never offer it to someone with an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth; Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
Infatuation paints a person with qualities that are really in our own mind. Seeing that can loosen an obsession without contempt for anyone.
Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He contrasts the body, made of impure stuff, with the fine qualities he had imagined in it, and calls the confusion a superimposition born of ignorance.
