Uddhava Gita 21.19

21.19 Pururavas

pitroḥ kiṃ svaṃ nu bhāryāyāḥ svāmino'gneḥ śvagṛdhrayoḥ | kimātmanaḥ kiṃ suhṛdāmiti yo nāvasīyate ||

Does it belong to the parents, to the wife, to the master, to the fire, to dogs and vultures? To oneself, or to one's friends? This can never be settled.

This is about identity, not neglect: caring for one's body and health remains a duty.

Meaning today and context

The body is claimed by many and owned by none; holding it lightly frees us from making it the whole of who we are.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He asks to whom the body really belongs, since so many claim it.
