Uddhava Gita 22.54

22.54 Krishna to Uddhava

yaḥ svadattāṃ parairdattāṃ hareta suraviprayoḥ | vṛttiṃ sa jāyate viḍbhugvarṣāṇāmayutāyutam ||

One who takes away the livelihood of a deity or a brahmin, whether given by himself or by others, is born as a worm in excrement for ten thousand times ten thousand years.

Purāṇic punishment imagery, not a literal threat; it must not be used to frighten anyone, and 'brahmin' here must not be read as ranking people by birth.

Meaning today and context

The lasting point is plain: taking back or stealing what was given for a sacred or public purpose is a grave wrong.

Krishna (Bhagavata 11.27.54) warns that one who seizes the livelihood given to a deity or to brahmins, whether given by himself or by others, is born as a worm in filth for countless years.
