Uddhava Gita 23.11

23.11 Uddhava to Krishna

ātmāvyayo'guṇaḥ śuddhaḥ svayaṃjyotiranāvṛtaḥ | agnivaddāruvadaciddehaḥ kasyeha saṃsṛtiḥ ||

The Self is imperishable, beyond the guṇas, pure, self-luminous and unveiled, like fire; the body is insentient, like wood. Whose, then, is saṃsāra here?

Meaning today and context

The image is fire and wood: the light is not the fuel, and the fuel cannot see. Asking where our suffering fits between them is a way of examining what we take ourselves to be.

Uddhava continues his question to Krishna (Bhagavata 11.28.11).
