23.16 Krishna to Uddhava

dehendriyaprāṇamano'bhimāno jīvo'ntarātmā guṇakarmamūrtiḥ | sūtraṃ mahānityurudheva gītaḥ saṃsāra ādhāvati kālatantraḥ ||

The jīva, the inner self, identifying with body, senses, breath and mind, takes on a form made of guṇas and karma; called the 'thread' and the 'great principle' in many ways, it runs through saṃsāra, driven by time.

Meaning today and context

The restless self that rushes from one thing to the next is built from identification and habit, pushed along by time. Recognising this is the first step to stepping out of the rush.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.28.16): the jīva, identified with body, senses, breath and mind, runs through saṃsāra driven by time.
