23.17 Krishna to Uddhava

amūlametadbahurūparūpitaṃ manovacaḥprāṇaśarīrakarma | jñānāsinopāsanayā śitena cchittvā munirgāṃ vicaratyatṛṣṇaḥ ||

This rootless thing, shown in many forms as the actions of mind, speech, breath and body, the sage cuts with the sword of knowledge sharpened by worship, and wanders the earth free of thirst.

Understanding alone can be blunt; devotion and practice sharpen it. Together they cut through compulsive patterns in thought, speech and action, leaving a person free of the constant thirst for more.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.28.17): the sage cuts this rootless tangle with the sword of knowledge and wanders free of thirst.
