karoti karma kriyate ca jantuḥ kenāpyasau codita ānipatāt | na tatra vidvānprakṛtau sthito'pi nivṛttatṛṣṇaḥ svasukhānubhūtyā ||
A living being acts and is changed by its acts, impelled by something until death. Not so the wise one: though he remains in nature, his thirst is gone through tasting the joy of his own being.
Meaning today and context
Most of us are pushed by forces we barely notice into a lifelong round of doing. One who has found contentment within still acts, but is not driven.
Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.28.30): an ordinary being is driven to act till death; the wise one, content in himself, is not.
