Uddhava Gita 23.32

23.32 Krishna to Uddhava

yadi sma paśyatyasadindriyārthaṃ nānānumānena viruddhamanyat | na manyate vastutayā manīṣī svāpnaṃ yathotthāya tirodadhānam ||

Even if he sees sense-objects, which are unreal, the wise one rejects them by reasoning as other than the Self and does not take them as real, just as one who has woken regards a fading dream.

Calling the world or the body unreal is a teaching about identity and attachment, not a reason to neglect your health, family, work or treatment.

Meaning today and context

We can see and use things without being hypnotised by them. Like remembering a dream in the morning, we can engage with the world while knowing it is not what defines us.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.28.32): even seeing sense-objects, the wise one does not take them as ultimately real, like a dream after waking.
