brāhmaṇe pukkase stene brahmaṇye'rke sphuliṅgake | akrūre krūrake caiva samadṛkpaṇḍito mataḥ ||
Toward a brahmin and a Pukkasa (an outcaste), toward a thief and one devoted to the holy, toward the sun and a spark, toward the gentle and the cruel: the one who sees equally is held to be wise.
Words like brahmin and Pukkasa are the social labels of the text's time, named here to be overcome. Equal vision is not tolerance of harm: seeing the divine in a cruel person does not mean staying near them if they are dangerous (police 112).
Meaning today and context
Real wisdom does not rank people by status, background or even past conduct when it comes to their worth. The same presence is in all, as the same fire is in the sun and in a spark.
Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.29.14) describes the wise person's equal vision across every social extreme.
