apyuddhava tvayā brahma sakhe samavadhāritam | api te vigato mohaḥ śokaścāsau manobhavaḥ ||
Uddhava, my friend, have you grasped Brahman well? Has your delusion gone, and that grief born of the mind?
For someone grieving, the loss must be acknowledged first; the verse does not dismiss mourning, which is natural and needs time.
Meaning today and context
A caring teacher asks not only 'did you understand?' but 'are you at peace?'. The point of wisdom is to ease confusion and sorrow.
Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.29.29) checks, as a friend, whether the teaching has done its work.
