Uddhava Gita 24.6

24.6 Uddhava to Krishna

naivopayantyapacitiṃ kavayastaveśa | brahmāyuṣāpi kṛtamṛddhamudaḥ smarantaḥ | yo'ntarbahistanubhṛtāmaśubhaṃ vidhunvann | ācāryacaittyavapuṣā svagatiṃ vyanakti ||

The wise, Lord, can never finish repaying you, not even with the lifespan of Brahmā, as they remember with growing joy what you have done: you who, from within and without, wash away what is impure in embodied beings, and show them your own path in the form of the teacher outside and the guide in the heart.

Meaning today and context

Guidance comes to us in two ways: through good teachers in the world, and through the quiet voice of conscience within. Both deserve gratitude, and both can be trusted together.

Uddhava to Krishna (Bhagavata 11.29.6) says the wise can never repay Krishna, who guides beings both as the outer teacher and as the inner guide.
