Uddhava Gita 3.1

3.1 Avadhuta to Yadu

sukhamaindriyakaṃ rājansvarge naraka eva ca | dehināṃ yadyathā duḥkhaṃ tasmānneccheta tadbudhaḥ ||

O King, the pleasure of the senses comes to embodied beings in heaven and in hell alike, just as pain does, unsought. Knowing this, the wise do not crave it.

Meaning today and context

Pleasant moments come on their own, like painful ones, whatever our circumstances. Spending life chasing them is wasted effort; the energy is better given to what lasts.

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. Beginning a new set of teachers, he says pleasure and pain both come unsought, so the wise do not chase sense-pleasure.
