Uddhava Gita 3.21

3.21 Avadhuta to Yadu

tāvajjitendriyo na syādvijitānyendriyaḥ pumān | na jayedrasanaṃ yāvajjitaṃ sarvaṃ jite rase ||

A man who has mastered the other senses is not yet master of his senses until he has conquered taste; when taste is conquered, all is conquered.

Mastering taste means moderation, not restricting food in harmful ways. Not dietary advice.

Small daily habits around eating are a real test of self-control. Steadiness there tends to spread to everything else.

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. He concludes the fish's lesson: taste is the key sense to master.
