Uddhava Gita 3.32

3.32 Pingala

aho mayātmā paritāpito vṛthā sāṅketyavṛttyātivigarhyavārtayā | straiṇānnarādyārthatṛṣo'nuśocyātkrītena vittaṃ ratimātmanecchatī ||

Ah, I have tormented myself for nothing with this trade of meetings, a most blameworthy living, wanting money and pleasure from pitiable men, slaves of lust and greed, by selling myself.

Pingala's story is a seeker's turn to God, not a judgement on sex workers. It must never be used to demean or shame anyone for their work or past. For someone weighed down by shame about their past, the verse is about turning, not self-punishment; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Trading ourselves, our time, dignity or values, to get money or approval from others wears us out. The verse is a person seeing that she deserves better.

Pingala, disenchanted at midnight, sings to herself; the Avadhuta reports her song to King Yadu. She grieves the pain she caused herself by living for money and pleasure from others.
