Uddhava Gita 4.27

4.27 Avadhuta to Yadu

jihvaikato'mumapakarṣati karhi tarṣā | śiśno'nyatastvagudaraṃ śravaṇaṃ kutaścit | ghrāṇo'nyataścapaladṛkkva ca karmaśaktir | bahvyaḥ sapatnya iva gehapatiṃ lunanti ||

The tongue drags him one way, thirst another; the sex organ another, and skin, belly and ears elsewhere; the nose one way, the restless eye another, and the powers of action yet another. Like many co-wives, they tear at the master of the house.

The co-wives image is a simile from its time about one's own cravings; it is not a statement about women.

Meaning today and context

Every craving pulls in its own direction, and trying to satisfy all of them leaves us torn and exhausted. Noticing this pull is the first step to mastering it.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): the senses pull a person in every direction, like many co-wives tugging at one husband.
