na dehināṃ sukhaṃ kiñcidvidyate viduṣāmapi | tathā ca duḥkhaṃ mūḍhānāṃ vṛthāhaṅkaraṇaṃ param ||
No embodied being, not even the learned, has any happiness of his own making; nor is sorrow reserved for the foolish. The pride of being the doer is utterly vain.
Meaning today and context
Being clever or educated does not guarantee a happy life, and hardship is not proof that someone is foolish. That should keep us humble about our successes and gentle about others' troubles.
Bhagavata 11.10.18. Krishna observes that pleasure and pain do not follow cleverness or ignorance, so the pride of being the one who secures happiness is empty.
