Uddhava Gita 6.32

6.32 Krishna to Uddhava

ājñāyaivaṃ guṇāndoṣānmayādiṣṭānapi svakān | dharmānsantyajya yaḥ sarvānmāṃ bhajeta sa tu sattamaḥ ||

Knowing the merits and faults [of duties] in this way, the one who gives up all his own duties, even those I have taught, and worships me, is the best of the good.

Giving up duties here means not clinging to ritual rules over love of God. It is not advice to abandon family, work, dependants or treatment.

Meaning today and context

Rules and roles matter, but love of God sits above them all. The verse is about where one's heart rests, not about dropping one's responsibilities.

Bhāgavata 11.11.32. Krishna says that the best of the good is the one who, understanding the merits and faults of duties, gives them all up and worships him alone; compare Gita 18.66.
