Uddhava Gita 6.6

6.6 Krishna to Uddhava

suparṇāvetau sadṛśau sakhāyau yadṛcchayaitau kṛtanīḍau ca vṛkṣe | ekastayoḥ khādati pippalānnamanyo niranno'pi balena bhūyān ||

Two birds, alike and companions, have by chance made their nest in the same tree. One of them eats the fruit of the pippala; the other, eating nothing, is still the greater in strength.

Meaning today and context

Part of us is always tasting life, sweet and bitter, and is pulled about by it. Another part only watches and is stronger for not grabbing. Both are in the same tree.

Bhāgavata 11.11.6. Krishna uses the image of two birds on one tree, also found in the Mundaka and Shvetashvatara Upanishads: the self who tastes experience and the Lord who only witnesses.
