Meaning today and context

Our life in the world is a complex growth with deep roots in desire and action, bearing both pleasure and pain. Seeing its structure is the first step to not being trapped in it.

Krishna describes the tree of saṃsāra in riddling numbers. They are usually read as: two seeds, merit and sin; three stems, the guṇas; five trunks, the elements; eleven branches, the senses and mind; two birds, the individual self and the Lord; two fruits, pleasure and pain. Other readings exist.
