Uddhava Gita 7.23

7.23 Krishna to Uddhava

adanti caikaṃ phalamasya gṛdhrā grāmecarā ekamaraṇyavāsāḥ | haṃsā ya ekaṃ bahurūpamijyairmāyāmayaṃ veda sa veda vedam ||

Vultures that roam the village eat one fruit of it; swans that live in the forest eat the other. He who, through those worthy of honour, knows the One that appears in many forms through māyā, he knows the Veda.

Meaning today and context

People who grab at the world taste mostly its bitter fruit; those with a quieter, detached mind taste its sweetness. Real knowledge is not information but seeing the one behind the many.

Krishna says the greedy, living in the village, eat one fruit of the tree; swans living in the forest eat the other; and whoever knows, through the teachers, the One that appears many through māyā knows the Veda.
