Upadeshasahasri 1.10

1.10 Shankaracharya

nanu dhruvaphalā vidyā nānyatkiṃcidapekṣate | nāgniṣṭomo yathaivānyaddhruvakāryo'pyapekṣate ||

[If you say:] 'Knowledge has a certain result and needs nothing else', [the objector answers:] not so; just as the agnishtoma sacrifice, though its result is certain, still requires other [subsidiary rites],

The objector argues from analogy: even a sure thing needs supporting steps. Shankara will show the analogy fails for knowledge (1.22–1.23).

The argument for combining knowledge with action goes on: one might say knowledge has a sure result and needs nothing else, but the objector replies with the example of the agnishtoma sacrifice.
