Every deliberate act carries a quiet sense of 'I am doing this'. Self-knowledge is seeing that what you most deeply are does not change with what you do, gain or lose.
Shankaracharya explains why action and knowledge conflict: action rests on identifying oneself as an agent, while knowledge is the recognition that the Self does not change.
