ahaṃ kartā mamedaṃ syāditi karma pravartate | vastvadhīnā bhavedvidyā kartradhīno bhavedvidhiḥ ||
Action proceeds from the thought 'I am the doer; this will be mine.' Knowledge depends on the thing as it is; an injunction [to act] depends on the doer.
Meaning today and context
'I do' and 'it will be mine' are the two hooks of most of our anxiety. You can choose whether to act, but you cannot choose what is true; knowing simply sees what is there.
Shankaracharya contrasts the mindset of action with that of knowledge: action needs a doer and an owner, while knowledge depends only on what is true.
