Upadeshasahasri 1.15

1.15 Shankaracharya

viruddhatvādataḥ śakyaṃ karma kartuṃ na vidyayā | sahaivaṃ viduṣā tasmātkarma heyaṃ mumukṣuṇā ||

Hence, because they are contradictory, action cannot be performed together with knowledge. Therefore the knower who seeks liberation must give up action.

Shankara argues here that ritual and worldly action cannot be combined with Self-knowledge, so the knower gives them up. This is about the inner sense of being the doer, written for monastic seekers of his time; it is not advice to abandon family, work, duties or care for others.

What falls away for the knower is acting from the sense 'I am the doer and this result will be mine'. Outwardly life and its responsibilities go on; inwardly the grip of doership loosens.

Shankaracharya draws his conclusion against the ritualist: since knowledge and action contradict each other, the seeker who knows must give up action.
