Upadeshasahasri 1.16

1.16 Shankaracharya

dehādyairaviśeṣeṇa dehino grahaṇaṃ nijam | prāṇināṃ tadavidyotthaṃ tāvatkarmavidhirbhavet ||

Living beings naturally take the embodied Self to be no different from the body and the rest. This arises from ignorance, and as long as it lasts, the injunctions to act remain valid.

Feeling 'I am this body, this name, this role' is natural, not a personal failing. While we live that way, duties rightly apply to us; Shankara does not tell anyone to drop them before understanding has come.

Shankaracharya explains why scriptural commands to act still apply to most people: they naturally take themselves to be the body.
