Upadeshasahasri 1.17

1.17 Shankaracharya

neti netīti dehādīnapohyātmāvaśeṣitaḥ | aviśeṣātmabodhārthaṃ tenāvidyā nivartitā ||

By 'not this, not this', the body and the rest are set aside and the Self alone is left, so that the Self may be known as free of all distinctions; by this, ignorance is removed.

Meaning today and context

You can find what you are by noticing what you are not: the body changes, moods pass, thoughts come and go, yet the one who sees them stays. What cannot be set aside is you.

Shankaracharya describes the method of the Upanishad: by negating everything that is not the Self ('not this, not this'), the Self alone remains.
