Upadeshasahasri 1.18

1.18 Shankaracharya

nivṛttā sā kathaṃ bhūyaḥ prasūyeta pramāṇataḥ | asatyevāviśeṣe hi pratyagātmani kevale ||

Once removed through a valid means of knowledge, how could it arise again? For there is nothing at all apart from the inner Self, which is alone and free of distinctions.

Meaning today and context

Real understanding does not need to be propped up: once you have seen the rope is a rope, the snake does not return. Knowledge that rests on seeing is different from a belief you must keep defending.

Shankaracharya argues that ignorance, once removed by valid knowledge, cannot come back, since nothing other than the Self exists to bring it back.
