Upadeshasahasri 1.19

1.19 Shankaracharya

na cedbhūyaḥ prasūyeta kartā bhokteti dhīḥ katham | sadasmīti ca vijñāne tasmādvidyāsahāyikā ||

If it does not arise again, how could there be the idea 'I am a doer, an enjoyer' once one knows 'I am Existence'? Therefore knowledge has no need of a helper.

Meaning today and context

When you know what you are, you do not need rituals or achievements to complete it. The sense of being the one who acts and the one who must get something loses its hold.

Shankaracharya concludes against the ritualist: once one knows 'I am Existence', the notions of doer and enjoyer cannot arise, so knowledge needs no help from action.
