Upadeshasahasri 1.22

1.22 Shankaracharya

naikakārakasādhyatvātphalānyatvācca karmaṇaḥ | vidyā tadviparītāto dṛṣṭānto viṣamo bhavet ||

Action is accomplished through many factors and its result is something other [than the agent]; knowledge is the opposite of this. Therefore the example is not a fair comparison.

A technical rebuttal: a ritual needs many parts and produces something new, while knowing the Self needs no parts and produces nothing, it only reveals what already is.

Shankaracharya rebuts the objector's analogy between knowledge and the agnishtoma sacrifice (1.10): the two are unlike in kind.
