Upadeshasahasri 1.24

1.24 Shankaracharya

pratyavāyastu tasyaiva yasyāhaṃkāra iṣyate | ahaṃkāraphalārthitve vidyete nātmavedinaḥ ||

The sin of omission applies only to one who has the ego-sense; self-identification [as the doer] and the desire for results do not exist in one who knows the Self.

Describes the inner state of one who already knows the Self; it is not a licence to neglect obligations to family, work or others.

Meaning today and context

Guilt over what one 'should' have done belongs to the self that thinks of itself as doer and owner. This is a description of the knower, not an excuse for anyone else to drop their responsibilities.

Shankaracharya answers the objector's fear of sin for neglecting duties (1.9): it applies only to someone who still identifies as a doer.
