Upadeshasahasri 1.3

1.3 Shankaracharya

karmāṇi dehayogārthaṃ dehayoge priyāpriye | dhruve syātāṃ tato rāgo dveṣaścaiva tataḥ kriyāḥ ||

Actions lead to taking on a body; once there is a body, the pleasant and the unpleasant are certain to come; from them come attachment and aversion, and from those, actions again.

Meaning today and context

Notice the loop in your own day: something pleasant or unpleasant happens, you want it or push it away, you act on that wanting, and the action sets up the next round. Seeing the loop is the first step to stepping out of it.

Shankaracharya begins to explain why knowledge is needed: he traces the chain by which action, the body, likes and dislikes feed each other.
