Upadeshasahasri 1.6

1.6 Shankaracharya

vidyaivājñānahānāya na karmāpratikūlataḥ | nājñānasyāprahāṇe hi rāgadveṣakṣayo bhavet ||

Knowledge alone removes ignorance; action does not, because it is not opposed to it. And unless ignorance is removed, attachment and aversion cannot come to an end.

Meaning today and context

You cannot work your way out of a misunderstanding, just as you cannot sweep away darkness; it goes only when the light comes. Likes and dislikes loosen when you see clearly, not by force.

Shankaracharya states his central thesis: only knowledge, not action, can remove ignorance.
